City of Fontana Updates Water Meter Policy

The BIA Baldy View Government Affairs team is pleased to announce the City of Fontana and Fontana Fire Department have now begun the administrative practice to allow hydraulic calculations to determine the required water meter sizing on new residential units. This administrative change represents a savings of $5,000 per home when moving from 1” to 3/4" water meter.

BIABV has been working with Fontana Fire & Planning for the past few months (lead by Ryan Combe of Lennar Homes) on a policy to allow 3/4” water meter installation. Prior to this Fontana had been implementing an outdated practice, requiring a minimum 1" water meter for all new homes, regardless of size. BIA members can now prepare hydraulic calculations for 3/4" and 5/8" water meters (where applicable) to demonstrate sufficient flow rates that meet all fire suppression requirements.

Cost Reduction from 1” to 3/4” Water Meter (per home)

  • Fontana Water Company: $2,640 savings
  • Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA) “One-Water” fee: $2,640 savings
  • Homeowner Utilities Service Fee: $156 annual savings
